Delegation Will Learn About Germany’s Workforce Development Programs and Dual Education System

ST. PAUL, MN – The University of Minnesota's Center for German & European Studies has selected two Rochester-area legislators, Rep. Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester) and Sen. Dave Senjem (R-Rochester) to join a Minnesota delegation to Stuttgart, Germany, June 2-8. Delegation members will meet with experts involved with running Germany’s workforce development programs and dual track education system.

“I am honored to have been invited by the University of Minnesota and look forward to learning and sharing with our German counterparts. This exchange provides a great opportunity to gather ideas that might also benefit Minnesota,” said Rep. Norton. “And it will be great to have Sen. Senjem joining me for this valuable exchange.”

The Minnesota delegation is comprised of individuals representing government, business, labor, K-12 education and post-secondary education. Similar exchanges have taken place in recent years concerning health care and energy issues. The workforce focus is a new and exciting opportunity.

In addition to meeting with their German counterparts, delegation members also will visit small and mid-size businesses that recruit employees via the apprenticeship system and visit with teachers and administrators at post-secondary institutions involved in workforce development.

The exchange is hosted by the University of Minnesota's Center for German & European Studies in cooperation with the University of Minnesota's College Readiness Program and Germany's Foreign Office. Additional cooperating partners are the U of M's Carlson School of Management, Humphrey School for Public Affairs, College of Education and Human Development and MnSCU. Participants supplement their expenses personally and no state taxpayer funds are used for the program.
