Statement on Dayton Budget Proposal

Friday, January 25, 2013

(ST. PAUL) — Earlier today, Governor Dayton released his new budget proposal for the 2014-15 biennium. The proposed budget looks at Minnesota’s long-term needs and address the structural deficits that have plagued the state for the last decade.

State Representative Kim Norton (DFL – Rochester) released the following statement on the Governor’s budget:

“We need to balance the budget in a sustainable and structurally balanced way. I was especially pleased to see long-term investments in childcare and early childhood, as well as K-12 education, college tuition assistance, and economic development funding included in Governor Dayton’s budget proposal. We need to ensure Minnesota is prepared for the economy of the future—these investments will help us reach that goal.

“The budget also proposes reducing corporate income tax rate, while closing unfair loopholes making Minnesota’s businesses more competitive and will help create new jobs. Included in the comprehensive tax reforms are property tax relief and a drop in the sales tax rate to offset broadening the base, which stabilizes our state revenues and has long been recommended by committees and economists.

“Governor Dayton’s budget proposal gives us a place to start. Over the next several days I plan to carefully review the proposal. I am confident that the Governor, my fellow legislators and I can create a final budget that works for all Minnesotans.”
