State Rep. David Bly Sworn-In as Legislative Session Begins

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN - State Representative David Bly (DFL – Northfield) was officially sworn in yesterday as the state representative for District 20B. Rep. Bly represents Northfield, Lonsdale, Montgomery, and neighboring townships and is serving his third term. He previously served from 2006-2010.

“I’m honored and humbled to return to the Capitol to serve our communities,” said Rep. Bly. “Minnesotans clearly said that they expect their legislators focus on the issues that are important to middle class families, like balancing the budget fairly and responsibly, improving our schools, and strengthening our economy.”

Economic forecasts revealed early last month that lawmakers must tackle a $1.1 billion budget shortfall this year. When the money still owed to schools and inflation is included the shortfall rises to over $3 billion.

“It’s clear that we’re facing a number of challenges,” said Rep. Bly. “Our budget deficit roller coaster has left us with a stretch of time when we can pay for the services people want. We can’t continue to put things on credit or borrow from “Peter to pay Paul,” nor can we pretend that we can have all we want and not pay for it. We must start with a responsible budget that funds our priorities and doesn’t rely on paying for things by taxing and cutting the services of the poor and middle class.”

Recognizing the difficult task ahead in balancing the state budget, Rep. Bly signaled a desire to work on bipartisan solutions.

“I don’t believe that any one person or any one party has a monopoly on good ideas. I will listen to and work with anyone who truly wishes to put people to work and rebuild our economy. We must find solutions to the problems facing our state and show that Minnesota Government can work for everyone again,” added Rep. Bly.

Work will begin in legislative hearings throughout the coming weeks and months. This session Rep. Bly will serve as the Vice Chair of the Housing Finance and Policy Committee, and as a member of the Education Policy, Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture Finance, and the Judiciary Finance and Policy Committees.

“I’m very pleased to be serving on these important committees,” said Rep. Bly. “There’s a lot to be done and I’m ready to get to work for the people of our district and the state.”

Throughout the legislative session, Rep. Bly encourages all constituents to contact him directly with any questions, comments, or concerns on any legislative issue. Rep. Bly can be reached by phone at (651) 296-0171 or by email at rep.david.bly@house.mn.
