Democracy for the People

Friday, January 29, 2021

Rep. Nelson

Neighbors,

I hope you and yours are doing well. We’re one month down in the 2021 Legislative Session, and we’ve spent most of this month laying the groundwork for our legislative priorities. As chair of the State Government Finance and Elections Committee, one piece of legislation I’m proud to co-author is House File 9, which is part of the Democracy for the People Act.

Today, we finished the first committee stop for this legislation, which would strengthen and protect our democracy. Minnesotans hold free and fair elections in extremely high regard, as shown by our consistent leadership in statewide voter turnout. The Democracy for the People Act steps up during a critical time for our democracy and says that no matter your party, region, race, or age – our democracy needs to work for all Minnesotans.

Don’t Miss Out On Business Relief

As part of the COVID-19 assistance package we passed last year, the Minnesota Department of Revenue recently issued $67.3 million in Business Relief Payments to 3,981 restaurants, bars, gyms, and similar businesses across the state.

If you own a local Brooklyn Park business that may be eligible but has not received a payment, contact the Department of Revenue through the online inquiry process. The inquiry process closes on Friday, February 5.

The Governor’s COVID-19 Recovery Budget

This week, Governor Walz released his budget proposal for the next two years. The proposed COVID-19 Recovery Budget focuses on supporting working families, ensuring students catch up on learning, and helping small businesses stay afloat while driving Minnesota’s economic recovery. While I’m still reviewing the proposal, the Governor's budget moves our state in the right direction, and I look forward to continuing the conversation about how to build back better from this crisis.
