I mistakenly informed you that there was a meeting coming up next month, instead next week. The meeting is happening next Monday evening, June 29th, at Folwell Park. Here is the corrected information:
The Pollution Control Agency (PCA) is going to present its plan to incorporate environmental justice into all its work on June 29th in North Minneapolis. Environmental Justice (EJ) means making sure low income and people of color do not inequitably suffer from the effect of pollution. The PCA is aware that the Northside has EJ issues and it is making extra efforts here. It’s important for you to come to the meeting and let the PCA know ways to improve their plan.
For over a decade I tried to get the PCA to establish a plan to determine where there are EJ issues in the state and to take that into account in allowing permits. The PCA always opposed my legislation until last year. Then they reversed their position and now are busy working to carry out many of my suggestions. Last summer, a guest speaker at the U of M who is a national EJ expert said that if we enacted my proposals, we would be the leader in the country on EJ issues. Thankfully we are moving in that direction.
