Legislative Update- July 22, 2019

Monday, July 22, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer!

My family and I celebrated the union of my youngest daughter and our new son-in-law at the end of June. It was a beautiful wedding day filled with love.

Several new laws took effect on July 1, including the bipartisan two year state budget. Two cornerstone measures on which the DFL-led House and Republican-led Senate together successfully found consensus will help protect workers from stolen wages and address the opioid crisis that is devastating families in our community and across the state. You can find the full list of all the new laws from our nonpartisan Minnesota House of Representatives Public Information Services office.

Hands-Free Driving Begins August 1

In less than two weeks, Minnesota will become the 17th state to require drivers to use handheld devices in ‘hands-free’ mode, with one touch activation allowed, and some calls in emergency situations only. If you would like to review what will be allowed under the new law, you can find a helpful guide from the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety here.

Save the Date- August 14 Community Listening Session

You’re invited to attend a community listening session to share your ideas, input, and questions. I’ll be joined by Minnesota’s new Attorney General Keith Ellison. Here are the details:

  • Wednesday, August 14 at 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Spring Lake Park High School (The Fine Arts Center), 1100 81st Ave NE, Spring Lake Park, MN 55432
Everyone is welcome. I look forward to our conversation!

Please contact me with any questions or feedback at 651-296-5510 or at rep.connie.bernardy@house.mn. I appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely,
