Dear Neighbor,
I’m sure you’ve seen the recent news about oil train explosions across the region. I’d like to invite you to join me and some of my legislative colleagues for a town hall meeting to discuss this issue on Tuesday, March 24th. The meeting will focus on rail safety and recently introduced legislation to improve oil train safety. Sen. Bobby Joe Campion and I will be joined by Rep. Mike Freiberg and Rep. Frank Hornstein.
The last five weeks have seen five oil train derailments in our region resulting in explosions and fires that have taken days to extinguish. A large quantity of oil moves through Minnesota by train, including through densely populated urban areas. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that more than 200 fuel trains will derail over the next twenty years, including 10 in densely populated urban areas. The derailments are projected to cost more than $18 billion.
What: Town Hall Meeting on Oil Train Safety
Who: Rep. Raymond Dehn
Sen. Bobby Joe Champion
Rep. Mike Freiberg
Rep. Frank Hornstein
Where: The Theodore Wirth Chalet - Fireplace Room (1301 Theodore Wirth Pkwy.)
When: Tuesday. March 24, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
It’s inevitable that we’ll see more oil train derailments and explosions. Unfortunately, we’re likely to see a derailment in an urban area with the potential to kill large numbers of people. Please come and join us to discuss how we can address this issue.
I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Raymond Dehn
