Statement from Representative Anzelc new on sulfate standard

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

ST. PAUL – Today, Representative Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) met with the Commissioner of Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), John Linc Stine, and his staff to review an updated standard for sulfate and wild rice.

“I am optimistic because of Governor Dayton’s leadership. The commissioner outline a new rule-making process that will address sulfate, which is harmful to wild rice, and provides a path forward for taconite mines and municipal waste water treatment facilities. This rule will hopefully protect the economy in northeast Minnesota as well as clarify the environmental standards that protects our waters. This is a positive step forward for the Range and Minnesota.

“However, I am worried that the cuts proposed today by the Minnesota House Republicans will prevent the MPCA from having adequate staffing to complete the rule-making process in time. The Republican budget targets could pose a very large threat to the Iron Range.”
