Legislative Update (May 22, 2015)

Friday, May 22, 2015

Neighbors,

I’m pleased to report that Governor Dayton has signed SF878, our public safety omnibus bill. This bill contained many good provisions that will help us better protect Minnesotans, and – perhaps most importantly – protect your constitutional rights.

Specifically, this bill contained my provision to allow a Permit to Carry to be sufficient notification to the Commissioner of Public Safety that a law-abiding individual may carry a concealed firearm in Capitol-area buildings. In the past, individuals had to notify the Commissioner in writing prior to carrying on Capitol grounds. It’s worth noting that there has never been any criminal activity by permit holders on Capitol grounds. This was an outdated, expensive procedure that was unfair to those wishing to exercise their constitutional right. I am excited to have streamlined the process for legal permit holders and for the countless members of the Department of Public Safety who had to process notifications in the past.

Also included in the bill were laws to prevent the authorities from seizing lawfully owned firearms, to allow you to purchase firearms from neighboring states, and to allow you the opportunity to purchase a suppressor. All of these were good bills with broad bipartisan support, and I am thankful that Governor Dayton has signed them into law.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (651) 296-5999 or via email at rep.jim.nash@house.mn.

Enjoy your weekend,

Rep. Jim Nash
