House Republicans Committed to Ensuring Every Child Receives World-Class Education

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

Crown, Minn. - Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced Tuesday he intends on vetoing the E-12 Education budget (HF 844) passed by a vote of 71-59 in the Republican-led House and 52-14 in the DFL-led Senate.

"House Republicans are committed to ensuring every child, regardless of zip code, receives a world-class education. Over the last five months, we have worked together with Senate Democrats to pass a bipartisan budget investing $400 million in new money into Minnesota classrooms including 1.5 percent and 2 percent on the general education formula and more than $60 million for early learning initiatives," said Speaker Kurt Daudt (R-Crown).

In the final days of session, the gap between the governor's desired budget and the Republican-led House and DFL-led Senate's budget was $150 million. During that time, Republicans agreed to move an additional $100 million while the governor chose to move just $25 million.

"I am disappointed, but I will review the governor's preliminary 'veto' letter when it arrives and I am hopeful we can resolve this without the governor forcing a special session," concluded Speaker Daudt.
