FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: House Passes Budget Bill that Reforms State Government, Offers More Oversight to Protect Taxpayers

Monday, May 18, 2015

ST. PAUL, Minn.—On Monday, May 18, 2015, the Minnesota House passed the bipartisan State Government Finance Omnibus Bill authored by Representative Sarah Anderson (R-Plymouth). This legislation will fund several state agencies for Fiscal Years 2016-17. The bill passed 71-61.

“Over the last two years, state government spending grew three times faster than our economy. That's not sustainable governing, nor is it responsible," said Rep. Anderson. "Negotiating with the Senate Democrats, House Republicans took the lead on bringing real reforms and additional oversights to state government, limiting spending increases and ensuring Minnesota government is held accountable to hardworking taxpayers."

Some highlights of the legislation include:

  • Prioritizing veterans' health care by investing an additional $17 million for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs for state veterans' homes
  • Maintaining Military Affairs facilities
  • Cutting costs of county operations and saving property taxpayer money
  • Evaluating effectiveness of state programs and reducing the size of government
  • Simplifying the paperwork process for small businesses registering with the Secretary of State
  • Holding the line on state government spending growth
  • Supporting Healthy Eating initiatives for low-income families and kids

The State Government Finance Omnibus Bill, which also passed the Democrat-led Senate, will be sent to Governor Dayton for signature.
