Legislative Update (May 11, 2015)

Monday, May 11, 2015

Neighbors,

I hope that you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend. As the negotiations in the legislature heat up, news will be breaking rapidly. I hope that you will stay tuned to my Twitter and Facebook account to ensure you have the latest information on our budget bills.

I am thankful that I was appointed to the Higher Education conference committee, where I am able to oversee the higher education budget discussions and advocate for the needs of students of all ages. When I talk to students at the University of Minnesota and our other state schools, I am often told that their greatest concern is their job prospects post-graduation. I am reminded of the important task we have in the legislature to ensure that our students are not only safe on campus and being educated for the future, but that we are doing all we can to ensure a strong economy across the state of Minnesota.

Several weeks ago, we passed nearly $2 billion of tax relief for middle class Minnesota families. This tax relief targets families with children in school by expanding the education tax credit, ensures that our students receive relief on their student loans through a new deduction for interest and loan payments, and provides relief for our veterans, farmers, and business owners. While we negotiate with the Senate, I will continue to keep your thoughts in mind and will ensure our budgets continue to provide relief to our hardworking taxpayers.

Please continue to stay in touch to share your thoughts on any issues in the legislature or in our community. I appreciate the opportunity to share your feedback with my colleagues. You can reach me via phone at (651) 296-8891, or via email at rep.drew.christensen@house.mn.

Have a great week,

Rep. Drew Christensen
