Rep. Mahoney and Bipartisan Group Propose Changes to Family Law

Thursday, January 29, 2015

SAINT PAUL – Rep. Tim Mahoney (DFL - Saint Paul) announced that he and a bipartisan group of legislators, led by Rep. Peggy Scott (R – Andover), are moving a package of bills to improve Minnesota’s family laws.  Reps. Scott and Mahoney were joined by Rep. Carolyn Laine (DFL - Columbia Heights), Rep. Kim Norton (DFL - Rochester), and a group of family law experts.

“I’ve been working on this issue for a decade,” said Rep. Mahoney.  “This is a substantial reform of Minnesota’s family law.  This package of bills will be updating the factors in determining what’s in the best interest of children, improving child support statutes and making family law more clear in general.”

After the urging of Governor Dayton in 2012, a group of more than 30 experts and partners, representing all sides of family law, began a dialogue on bringing Minnesota’s family laws into the 21st century.  The package of bills being introduced today is the consensus result of those meetings.

Rep. Mahoney encourages constituents to contact him with any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas. Rep. Mahoney can be reached by phone at 651-296-4277 or by email at rep.tim.mahoney@house.mn. Constituents can also visit Rep. Mahoney’s legislative page and sign up for email updates.
