Reps. Johnson and Mahoney Respond to Governor’s Budget Proposal

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Saint Paul – Today, Governor Mark Dayton released his budget proposal for the next two years. With a budget surplus and a growing economy, he continued to build on the progress of the last two years by putting forward a regionally balanced budget that invests in early childhood education, affordable college, job training, transportation and broadband infrastructure, and tax breaks for hard working, middle class families.

“Two years ago we balanced the budget without shifts or gimmicks and today we have a balanced budget and a surplus,” said Rep. Tim Mahoney.  “We’ve made great progress for Minnesota and the East Side.  This budget continues to build on that progress.”

“The Governor’s budget will build on that progress,” said. Rep. Johnson.  “We’re going to continue our commitment to Minnesota by investing in education, closing the achievement gap, making childcare more affordable, and making sure seniors don’t get kicked out of their homes due to property taxes.”

The Governor’s budget guarantees that every child in Minnesota will be able to attend free Pre-Kindergarten, ensuring that more children are ready and able to succeed in school. It makes college more affordable and expands job training, which will keep good-paying jobs here in Minnesota as our economy changes. He invests in repairing our crumbling transportation infrastructure and expanding transit, making our communities more livable. The budget also expands tax credits and incentives for families raising children, making affordable, high quality childcare more accessible.
