Hansen Introduces Bill to Protect Hockey Youth from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Thursday, January 15, 2015

St. Paul—Last week Rep. Rick Hansen introduced HF 42, which would provide an additional $2 million to the ‘Mighty Ducks” grant program. The grants are to install, renovate, or replace heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in existing indoor ice arenas whose ice resurfacing and ice edging equipment are not powered by electricity. The grants will improve indoor air quality by reducing concentrations of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

“I have worked on these issues for several years and we are making progress,” said Rep. Hansen. “There is more to do, but it is clear Minnesota is a leader in ice arena air quality protection because of our action.”

The proposal has strong bi-partisan support from several authors and affect communities all across the state. Rep. Hansen said, “This is not an issue for one community, this is a concern statewide, which is why it is critical these are grants open to local government units across Minnesota.”
