Minnesota lawmakers attend workshop to help build trust across the aisle

Friday, January 9, 2015

ST. PAUL – The National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD) has developed a Next Generation initiative that helps state legislators cultivate a culture where discourse and collaboration typify public policy development. Through this introductory workshop, state legislators spent a half day together, reaching across the aisle, to build trust through civil discourse. At the request of Next Generation Co-Champion Rep. JoAnn Ward (DFL – Woodbury), NICD brought its Building Trust through Civil Discourse workshop to St. Paul yesterday.

“In an era where gridlock is pervasive in Washington, we seek to change the status quo in our local politics. We recognize that political dysfunction is not helpful to our constituents, and want to find a new way to solve our state’s most pressing issues. Session began this week, and I’d like to start off on the right foot by working with Republicans immediately,” said Rep. Ward.

The workshop is designed to strengthen relationships across the aisle and increase the effectiveness of state legislatures.

The workshop was attended by the attached list of legislators and moderated by Next Generation facilitators.
