Hortman to Represent District 36B, serve as Deputy Minority Leader

ST. PAUL – Minnesota state legislators gathered at the Capitol January 6th for the first day of the 2015 legislative session.  Rep. Melissa Hortman took the oath of office to represent District 36B, which contains portions of Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids.

“The first day of session is always special,” said Rep. Hortman “It is an honor to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives representing the residents of Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids.  Taking the oath of office, I am mindful of the important role that citizens and representatives play in our democracy.  I work hard to stay in touch with the residents of my district so that I can be a strong advocate for their views at the State Capitol in St. Paul.”

Hortman has been elected to a leadership role within the DFL House Caucus.  She was elected to serve as a Deputy Minority Leader by her DFL colleagues.  In addition, Hortman will serve on the Job Growth and Energy Affordability Policy and Finance and the Rules and Legislative Administration Committees.

“I’ve been preparing for the session by meeting with community members to listen to their legislative priorities, and visiting with my colleagues from around the state to hear their perspectives,” said Rep. Hortman. “There is a lot of common ground.  Most Minnesotans want to continue the economic progress the state has seen over the last two years.  Families continue to place a high priority on K-12 education and affordable college tuition.”

Hortman plans to focus on issues important to the communities she serves.  She supports an additional two-year college tuition freeze and continued investment in Minnesota’s K-12 schools as her highest legislative priorities.  Hortman also supports improving the long-term funding of transportation infrastructure in the region and ensuring the continued creation of jobs in our area and around the state.
