News from Rep. Roz Peterson 04-24-2015

Friday, April 24, 2015
Dear Friends,

The legislature is hard at work this week, working to pass our 2016-2017 budget bills. All this week and into this weekend we'll be having long floor sessions, debating and passing our omnibus bills. Once those bills are passed we'll begin working with the Senate to find acceptable compromises that can pass the DFL Senate and the GOP House.

Here's an update on some of the big news items this week:

Tax Bill Released
On Monday House Republicans held a press conference to unveil our $2 billion tax cut proposal. Much of the tax relief is focused on the middle class, helping to put more money back in the pockets of families, college students, veterans, seniors, and farmers.

Included in the tax bill is one of my proposals for a research and development tax credit for businesses to help grow and retain better-paying jobs here in Minnesota by encouraging research and development investment.

Unfortunately our uncompetitive tax climate gives other states the upper hand when companies and small businesses are looking to expand and invest in research and development opportunities. I want the next great discoveries and inventions to continue to remain here in Minnesota where families benefit as a result.

Transportation Bill Passed
Tuesday the House passed our long-term transportation plan, part of a approach that puts $7 billion into roads and bridges over the next 10 years with bipartisan support on a 73-59 vote.

Rather than a harmful increase in the gas tax, our plan uses existing taxes on auto parts, vehicle leases, and rental cars to create the Transportation Stability Fund. This is dedicated, ongoing funding that will continue to fund road and bridge repairs into the future.

Minnesotans overwhelmingly support the approach our plan takes that invests billions into road and bridges without raising taxes. If legislators are willing to get creative, we can fund transportation without taking more money from the pockets of families.

35W Bridge Bill Hearing
The bill I chief authored that provides bonds to replace the 35W Bridge going over the Minnesota River received an informational hearing in the House Transportation Committee yesterday. Joining me to testify in favor of the bill was Steve Albrecht, the public works director for the City of Burnsville. MnDOT has said replacing this bridge is their 2nd highest priority of all of the bridge projects in the Metro area.

Prayer Breakfast
I had a wonderful time attending the Prayer Breakfast this morning in Burnsville with many residents and local leaders. Dr. Terry Hitchcock gave an inspirational keynote speech, reminding all of us that nothing is impossible without the help of God.

Sen. Dan Hall and I also had a great time meeting Mrs. Minnesota Kate Howe, who was named Mrs. Dakota County earlier this year.

I hope you'll stay in touch during the last few weeks of session, and send me your comments and thoughts on the budget and other bills that come before the House.
