News from Representative Petersburg 04-10-2015

Friday, April 10, 2015
Dear Friends,

On Monday I had the opportunity to visit Willow Creek Elementary in Owatonna to visit with students about my work at the legislature. These students have been working to gather support for a memorial at the State Capitol to honor those who constructed our Capitol from 1896-1907.

Tragically, six construction workers lost their lives during the process, and there is not a memorial of any sort honoring their sacrifice on the Capitol grounds.

These students learned about these six workers, and wanted to do something about it. They gathered 721 signatures online and by knocking on the doors of neighbors in support of their potential bill.

I plan to author legislation in the House that will serve as the companion to a bill that will be authored by Senator Vicki Jensen who represents Owatonna in the State Senate. Because it is late in the legislative session, there are no guarantees the bill will get passed, but I think this is a wonderful way for students to stay involved and learn about how the legislative process works. I will do what I can to move the bill forward, so they can continue to track it and follow how a bill becomes a law.

Over the next several weeks, we will be working on putting together and passing our budget for the 2016-2017 biennium. I'm looking forward to what's sure to be a great deal of rigorous debate about transportation, water buffers, education, and other issues in the final weeks in Saint Paul. I hope you will continue to contact me with your thoughts and feedback. You can email me at rep.john.petersburg@house.mn, or call my office at 651-296-5368.
