Dear Friends,

I hope you had an enjoyable Easter/Passover break. It's great to be back in Saint Paul after a week of rest and time with family as we enter the final weeks ofsession.

Yesterday Governor Dayton gave his annual State of the State address. It was the fifth State of the State I've been fortunate to be able to attend, and I was grateful to have Donald Albrecht, a farmer from our area, joining me as my guest for the speech.

Donald, like many of the farmers in our community, has serious concerns about the Governor's proposed 50 foot buffer plan, and was hoping to hear from the Governor plans to make major changes to the plan to heed the concerns that have been expressed over the past month by farmers at meetings across the state.

Unfortunately, the Governor did not announce changes, nor did he announce any plans to give substantial tax relief to Minnesota families. Other than three small targeted tax credits, the Governor seems intent on spending every penny of the state's budget surplus. This is irresponsible and will ultimately put Minnesota on a path to future deficits if there is a downturn in the economy.

I believe Minnesotans are looking for us to exercise restraint, and be responsible stewards of taxpayer money. Taking the surplus and going on a spending spree is the exact opposite of fiscal responsibility.

In the coming weeks, Republicans will be putting together and passing our budget bills. We are committed to meaningful tax relief formiddle class families, and spending your tax dollars responsibly, working to ensure that government is not growing faster than the budgets of families who help fund it.
