News from Representative Uglem 03-27-2015

Friday, March 27, 2015
Dear Friends,

The big news this week was the release of the Republican transportation proposal. Our long-term 10 year plan invests more than $7 billion in our state's roads and bridges, and does it without a tax increase.

Many of you have written, called, or indicated on my legislative survey (which you can still take by clicking here) that you don't support an increase in the gas tax. Our plan listens to the majority of Minnesotans who want to fund roads and bridges—one of the basic functions of government—using money we already have.

Our plan uses sales tax proceeds from vehicle leases, car rentals, and auto parts, as well as bonding and a small portion of the state's $1.869 billion surplus to address our long-term transportation needs.

Compare this to the Senate and the Governor's plan which would result in about a 16 cent per gallon minimum increase in the gas tax, and raise other fees as well.

We now have two very different proposals on the table, and will continue discussing the best path forward in the coming weeks and months. I hope you'll weigh in and let me and your other elected officials know what you think is the best approach to transportation. Your input is always welcome at rep.mark.uglem@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-5513.

The legislature will be on Easter Break next week, and will not have any committee meetings or floor sessions. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with family and being back in the community as we prepare for what's surely going to be a busy final six weeks once we return.

Have a great weekend,

Mark Uglem
State Representative, District 36A
