Minnesota House Passes Halverson Bill Updating Self-Storage Facility Regulation

Monday, May 5, 2014

St. Paul, Minnesota — Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation authored by state Representative Laurie Halverson (DFL – Eagan) to update regulation related to self-storage businesses (SF 2398). Rep. Halverson worked with the Minnesota Self-Storage Association — which represents 800 small, community businesses — and other stakeholders to reach an agreement.

“In the ‘Unsession’ the goal of modernizing laws is to make them work better for our citizens,” said Rep. Halverson. “This bill provides strong consumer and strong small business protections. The bill also provides additional protections for military members and consumer conveniences through the optional use of email, streamlining the lien law process, improving notices, and additional contacts for notices of default.”

Self-storage businesses are often small family-owned operations. This bill clarifies Minnesota lien laws that our small business owners must enforce, making it easier for them to operate.

The bill now heads back to the Senate for final approval before being sent to Governor Dayton.
