Isaacson's Efforts Yield MNsure Improvements

Friday, May 2, 2014

ST. PAUL, MN – This week, MNsure announced implementation procedures for consumers eligible for a Qualified Health Plan to obtain retroactive coverage, tax credits and cost sharing reductions.

State Representative Jason Isaacson (DFL – Shoreview) has been advocating for the coverage improvements since the beginning of the year, meeting multiple times with MNsure’s CEO and staff, health insurance companies, the business community and legislative staff.

Isaacson says his efforts were in response to several constituents who contacted him after experiencing difficulty with the enrollment process ahead of the December 31 deadline to sign up.

“This is another important step toward making sure every Minnesotan has access to high-quality, affordable health care,” said Isaacson. “MNsure is building on our state’s nation-leading health care system by offering the lowest premium rates in the nation and tax credits to further reduce costs for middle class families and small businesses. I’m proud that over 200,000 Minnesotans have enrolled in affordable coverage. I think that kind of success is a result of quickly addressing technical challenges during the initial rollout. We’ve seen big improvements and positive results ever since.”

Isaacson drafted legislation at the beginning of the 2014 Session to enact the coverage improvements but was able to work with MNsure to find non-legislative solutions.

The recently announced procedures are in response to a federal government bulletin published February 27, 2014 that allows state-based marketplaces, like MNsure, flexibility in addressing consumers with “exceptional circumstances.”
