Monday, April 28, 2014

St. Paul – On Monday, April 28, State Representative Kathy Brynaert (DFL-Mankato) will be presented the Parents United Distinguished Leadership in Education Award during a ceremony at 10:45am that is part of the Parent Leadership Summit at TIES Conference Center (1640 Larpenteur Ave. W, St. Paul, MN 55108).

Rep. Brynaert will be honored for her years of service to education in the Minnesota House. Retiring after this session, she was first elected to the House in 2006.  Prior to her legislative service, she had been actively involved with Mankato Public Schools, and then served as a member of the Mankato School Board from 1995-2006.

“I’m deeply honored by this award.  It has been my pleasure to work as an active partner with students, parents, teachers and education advocates at the legislature to improve education in Minnesota. I have worked consistently to support research-based and data driven policies and practices. And my success has been based on the wealth of experience and understanding shared by a wide range of education professionals. All of those who have come to the table with me in these efforts share in this award. ” said Rep. Brynaert.

Parents United for Public Schools has a tradition of awarding legislators who have made a major impact on education in Minnesota.  Previous recipients of the award have included former State Representative Mindy Greiling (DFL- Roseville), and former State Senator Gen Olson (R- Mound).

“Representative Brynaert has been a champion for research-based policy and an exemplary colleague to both sides of the aisle in her service to Minnesota’s public schools,” said Mary Cecconi, Executive Director of Parents United for Public Schools.

Parents United for Public Schools exists to unite and empower those who value public education in Minnesota to be strong advocates for excellence in public schools.  During the Parent Leadership Summit, there will be a 10-year retrospective of education legislation and impacts on Minnesota Schools.  State and federal changes in a variety of areas will be highlighted, including: academic standards, testing, teacher training, licensure and evaluations, funding, charter legislation and state structure.
