Governor Releases Updated Budget Recommendations

With the February forecast increasing Minnesota's projected surplus for FY2016-17 from $1 billion to $1.9 billion, Governor Dayton has updated his budget recommendations. In it, he increases general fund spending to a whopping $43 billion, spending all but $13 million of the surplus.

Even with this additional money, I find it disappointing that he only includes $25 million for nursing homes, one of the top legislative priorities for St. Cloud folks and people around the state this session. Nursing homes were completely left out of his previous budget.

I believe taking care of our elderly and disabled, along with the hardworking staff in nursing and long-term care facilities is so important. I will continue to advocate for these folks this session.

Furthermore, even with an additional $900 million added to the surplus, Governor Dayton is still advocating to raise the gas tax, hitting every Minnesota driver with at least an additional 16 cents/per gallon tax. Just when folks are starting to see some relief at the pump, he wants to take more from your family budget.

The House will release their budget targets next week. I will continue to advocate for responsible government spending that funds Minnesotans' priorities without raising taxes.

Cybermation

I am looking forward to a presentation next week in the Aging and Long-Term Care Committee from Tom Ardolf, the President of Cybermation in Waite Park. He will be sharing more about his innovative Care Connect product, which can greatly benefit Minnesota's seniors.

It's always great to hear from constituents in committee!
