Addressing long-term care challenges

Friday, March 6, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

Minnesota faces substantial challenges as its population ages and I would like to invite area citizens to attend a public meeting March 14 in Glenwood to discuss long-term care.

Reports show as many citizens will reach retirement age this decade than in the four previous decades combined. This poses significant challenges in how we provide care and efforts are underway at the state Capitol to help the state manage this demographic shift. We are hosting this meeting to hear thoughts, ideas and concerns from local citizens on this subject.

Rep. Joe Schomacker from Luverne chairs the Aging and Long-Term Care Policy Committee and he will be joining us. He is the chief author of a bill I am co-authoring initiatives to help address some of the issues in long-term care. We can talk more about this package during the meeting.

If you aren't able to attend this long-term care meeting, there are other ways you can let me know your thoughts. Sen. Torrey Westrom and I are working to iron out a schedule of town hall meetings in District 21B and I also plan to make a survey of the issues available soon.

As for news from the Capitol, a bill I authored to provide civil protection for people who open up their farms to host agri-tourism events advanced in a House Committee. This bill protects property owners, but does not relieve them of responsibility in cases of willful neglect.

Congratulations to Tom Anderson – no relation – of Alexandria, who was confirmed in the new class of University of Minnesota Regents. Tom will do well in representing Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District as a regent.

Stay in touch and hope to see you around the district soon.

Sincerely,

Paul
