We have had several long days at the Capitol this week as we debate important issues that will impact the future of our state for generations to come.
Supporting Our Students
It was great to take a break from the Capitol yesterday afternoon to read to the 2nd and 4th grade students at Community School of Excellence in St. Paul. I enjoyed reading Green Eggs and Ham and Caps for Sale to these bright and engaged young Minnesotans! Thank you to constituent Crystal Reece for the invitation to visit your school.
Last night, we passed HF2 on the House floor, of which I am a co-author. As the father of six children, I know that a high-quality education sets our Minnesota students on the road to future success. Our bill makes it easier for school districts to hire and retain high-quality teachers by allowing districts to implement policies for teacher layoffs that take into account a variety of factors, giving school districts the opportunity to tap into local talent as potential teachers, and fast-tracking licensure for out-of state educators that wish to teach in our local schools. I’m proud of my colleagues for putting students first.
Protecting Our Local Governments
On Thursday, I was appointed to serve on the Legislative Commission for Metropolitan Government by Speaker Daudt. This commission oversees several functions of the Metropolitan Council and gives recommendations to the legislature regarding the rate and amount of property tax levies implemented by the Met Council, the size and scope of the Met Council, budget requests and requests for an increase in debt made by the Met Council, as well as recommendations on several programs housed under the Met Council. I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve on this commission, and will be using my experience as the former mayor of Waconia to exercise oversight and identify ways to reduce the amount of burden the Met Council places on our large and small cities.
Preserving Second Amendment Rights
HF372, which reduces the burden on law-abiding, permit-holding citizens to carry a concealed firearm on State Capitol grounds, will be heard in the Public Safety and Crime Prevention committee soon. I know that many of you care deeply about this issue – if you would like to testify in favor of this piece of legislation, please contact my Legislative Assistant and she will ensure that you have the opportunity to speak up for your Second Amendment rights.
Introducing Hannah to State Government
I was blessed to have my daughter, Hannah, join me at the Capitol on Wednesday to learn more about her dad’s job in committee and in session. It is so important that we introduce civic engagement to our children at a young age, ensuring that they understand how to make their voice heard at all levels of government. Thank you to Speaker Daudt for letting Hannah gavel the members out of session!
