Legislative Update on February Forecast

Wednesday, March 4, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

On Friday, the Office of Minnesota Management and Budget released the February forecast which legislators and Governor Dayton will use as a framework to formulate the FY2016-17 budget. Minnesota's surplus was revised upward from $1 billion to $1.9 billion. While that's great news for state government, it shows that too much money has been taken from hardworking taxpayers.

Higher tax collection and significantly lower gas prices contributed to the increased surplus projections. Since our sizable surplus is connected to Minnesotans finally seeing some relief at the gas pump, I don't believe now is the time to implement a new gas tax in our state.

Moreover, because government took more from hardworking taxpayers than it needs, it's important we return some of this money back to you through tax relief. This session, legislators should pass additional tax relief to put more money back in your pocket. Ensuring that state government doesn't place additional strain on your family's budget this year is a top priority for House Republicans.

Furthermore, now that the February forecast has been released, legislative leaders will be announcing their budget targets for fiscal committees in the coming weeks. It is also expected that Governor Dayton will release revised budget recommendations, possibly asking the House and Senate to spend even more than the $42 billion in his original proposal from last month.

I will continue to work for the people and priorities of Blaine, fighting hard to bring you tax relief and be a good steward of your hard earned taxpayer dollars.

As always, it is a privilege to represent you in the Minnesota House. Please let me know if I can ever assist you or your family on a matter of state government.

Have a great week,

Tim
