Legislative Update (2-27-15)

Friday, February 27, 2015
Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to those of you who took the time to visit my office in St. Paul this week. It was great to meet with so many of you and hear your thoughts, concerns, and ideas for how we can make government work better for you.

Protecting the Unborn

I am happy to be chief authoring a bill, House File 1047, which will bring much needed protections to the unborn. The Born Alive Infants Protection Act has a number of provisions that are aimed to protect our youngest and most vulnerable citizens. While we already had some protections for these infants, this bill will strengthen them.
  • Recognizes that any human infant who is born alive despite an attempted abortion will be a fully recognized person and given immediate protection under the law
  • Medical personnel are required to preserve the life and health of an infant that is born alive following an attempted abortion
  • The law also changes statute or any ruling to make sure that when the words “person”, “human being”, “child”, or “individual” shall include every infant
Protecting the unborn is one of my top priorities at the legislature and something that I will continue to do as long as I have the privilege to serve.

Highway 10 Funding

Highway 10 is one of the most important issues affecting our district. Those of us who live in the northwest metro know that Highway 10 is in dire need of an additional lane of traffic, among other things, to help improve traffic flow.
On Wednesday, I introduced House File 1207 which would allocate funds to complete phase one of a comprehensive project to improve Highway 10 from Fairoak Boulevard to Ramsey Boulevard.
This bill, which is supported by Anoka County, allows the county to complete preliminary engineering, environmental analysis, and final design for the project. Once this is complete, the project will be shovel ready.
House File 1207, which has bipartisan support, is an important first step in seeing this important project completed.
