Legislative Update (Feb. 27, 2015)

Friday, February 27, 2015

Neighbors,

Thank you for your involvement in the political process. I am especially thankful for those of you that have reached out to me to share your thoughts on legislation as it moves through the House – your thoughts are very important to me as I discuss these issues with my colleagues.

On the campaign trail and as session ramps up, I’ve heard from parents and teachers across our district just how important it is to ensure that our children are receiving a world-class education. I’m working hard to guarantee that our children have the education necessary to keep the future open to their dreams.

The first bill I authored this session was HF554, which requires a two-thirds vote of the legislature for a school shift that reduces the payments made to schools below 90%. For too long, the legislature has been able to borrow money from our schools with just a simple majority. My bill ensures that the legislature must give serious consideration to any legislation that takes funds away from our student’s education, and protects their educational future.

Our students entering the 21st-century workforce need to have strong grasp on the intersection between technology and work. I authored three bills – HF838, HF854, and HF856 – to place technology into the hands of our students so that they can learn in the most innovative ways.

As the son of a teacher, I understand just how much work happens outside of the classroom. I believe that, when available, we should be streamlining paperwork processes for our hardworking teachers. I’ve authored HF804, which gives school districts the ability to partner with private sector information technology systems that allow them to accurately keep and transfer records of students with disabilities.

I’m proud of the bills that I’ve authored so far, but I know there is still more work to be done. As you speak to your children or grandchildren and their teachers, always stay in touch to share your ideas for how to make Minnesota a state with a great education foundation for years to come. You can meet with me in my office by calling me at (651) 296-8891 to set up an appointment, or email me directly at rep.drew.christensen@house.mn.

I look forward to hearing from you!
