STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF HOUSE FILE 8

Monday, February 23, 2015

St. Paul, MN- Rep. Jeff Backer (R-Browns Valley) released the following statement after the House unanimously passed House File 8 on a 130-0 vote.

House File 8, chief authored by Rep. Ron Kresha, makes policy changes to Minnesota's child protection system. The changes in this bill are two of the recommendations that came out of the 26-member Governor's Task Force on Child Protection earlier this year.

The Governor’s Task Force on Child Protection was created following the tragic death of 4 year-old Starbuck resident, Eric Dean.

“This bill is a first step toward fixing Minnesota's child protection system and making sure no child slips through the cracks,” said Backer. “I am pleased that my colleagues and I worked in a bipartisan fashion to help protect Minnesota children and make sure every child is kept safe and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

House File 8’s Senate companion bill, Senate File 807, has been given a second reading and will be up for a vote in the Senate in the coming weeks.
