New Tax Cuts Benefit Over One Million Minnesotans

Friday, March 28, 2014

To the editor:

Less than one month after the 2014 Session began, the DFL-led Legislature and Governor Dayton cut taxes for middle class families and eliminated three business-to-business sales taxes – all while maintaining a structurally balanced budget into the future. As a result, over one million Minnesotans will pay less in taxes, including married couples, working families, teachers, people with student loans, and homeowners.

I’m pleased we took swift action to fuel Minnesota’s positive economic momentum so more people can share in the benefits of our recovery.

If you have not filed your 2013 Minnesota tax return yet, the Department of Revenue encourages you to wait until April 3 to do so to allow time for changes to be fully implemented. If you already filed, you do not need to do anything right now. The Department of Revenue will examine your return, determine whether you qualify for new tax breaks then send you your refund. If your return cannot be adjusted, they will notify you that you need to file an amended return.

The tax bill we approved also includes additional benefits for our region, such as:

-Ensuring more equity in funding for northern Minnesota schools by allowing districts to receive up to $424 per pupil in “local optional revenue.”

-Creating a new fund using existing taconite production and occupation tax revenue to finance school upgrades and collaboration costs should local communities decide to do so.

-Authorizing Itasca County to issue general obligation bonds with lower interest rates to finance a nursing home facility constructed in 2008, which will save the county $1.3 million over the life of the bond.

This DFL-led Legislature is doing people’s work and we’re doing it quickly. I’m looking forward to passing a strong bonding bill so we can create more jobs and make sure our economy continues moving in the right direction.
