Legislative Update (Feb. 20, 2015)

Friday, February 20, 2015

Friends and neighbors,

Thank you to those of you that have reached out to me to share your thoughts on the legislation before the House. I serve you, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to voice your concerns to my colleagues.

MNsure Audit

On Tuesday, the Office of the Legislative Auditor released their comprehensive audit of MNsure, which was presented to us in the Commerce and Regulatory Reform committee. Identifying major structural problems with the website, customer service, leadership, and MNsure’s inability to meet goals, the Auditor concluded that “MNsure’s failures outweighed its achievements.”

In light of the audit and the reports I’ve heard from many of you, my colleagues and I have been discussing multiple ideas to make MNsure work better for you and your family. Early in the legislative session, I co-authored HF5, which increases affordability, access, and transparency in healthcare. Authored by Rep. Tara Mack (R-Apple Valley), HF5 will require our Commerce Department to seek federal waivers to allow Minnesotans the access to a tax credit, regardless of whether they purchase health insurance in Minnesota or in another state, and will increase transparency and accountability in MNsure. I’m proud to have signed on to this proposal, and am looking forward to discussing this and other options that will improve healthcare in Minnesota.

Transportation

It is one of my legislative priorities this year to ensure that our roads are safe and convenient for your travel to and from school, work, or the many fantastic activities in Maple Grove and Osseo. Majority Leader Peppin and I have been discussing a proposal to allocate money for Highway 610 in our district. As many of you may know, Highway 610 does not connect to Highway 94 – a major piece of roadway connecting our district to the rest of the state. It’s important to me that you are able to get to your destination easily, and this connection will improve the flow of traffic in and through our district.

Between The Lines with Al Travis

It was a pleasure to join Al Travis on his political talk show, Between The Lines, last week. We had a great conversation about my personal and professional life, our district, and many hot topics in the legislature. You can watch the entire show by clicking this link.

Legislative Appointment

I’m proud to have been appointed by Speaker Daudt to serve the Legislative Coordinating Commission Subcommittee on Claims. The subcommittee hears and makes recommendations to the legislature regarding payment on claims brought against the state, as well as handling legal claims that cannot be litigated in a traditional courtroom setting. I am excited to use my legal background on this subcommittee as we explore complex claims leveled against the state.

As always, please contact me to discuss your thoughts on any legislation introduced before the House, or any issues where I can be of help to you and your family. You can schedule a meeting with me by calling me at (651) 296-5356, or by emailing me directly at Rep.Dennis.Smith@house.mn.

It is an honor to work every day to make Maple Grove and Osseo a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
