Legislative Update (Feb. 6, 2015)

Friday, February 6, 2015

Friends,

It is an honor to serve you in the legislature.

In the News

The University of Minnesota newspaper, MN Daily, recently wrote an article about my candidacy and legislative goals. I’m proud to serve as the youngest member in the legislature, and am looking forward to using my experiences at the University of Minnesota to shape higher education policy. You can read the entire article here.

In the District

I’m looking forward to setting aside dedicated time every month to meet with you in-district. My first in-district office hours will be held on Saturday, February 14th.

When: Saturday, February 14th, 2015 from 9:00-11:00AM
Where: Flavor at the Depot, 4800 West 123rd
Street, Savage, MN 55375

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you and hearing your thoughts on the issues that matter most to you!

Focusing on Education

This week, I introduced HF552, which aims improve our children’s educational future by forcing the legislature to have serious discussions regarding school shifts. For too long, the legislature has borrowed money against our funding to school districts, forcing school districts to make cuts that drastically affect our students’ education opportunities. My bill calls for a two-thirds vote of both chambers in order to pass a school shift that provides less than 90% of the agreed-upon funding to school districts. This will allow both bodies to have a serious and in-depth discussion of the impact of such a drastic cut to our school districts, and will necessitate true bipartisan support for any large shift.

Congrats to Our Teachers

Finally, congratulations to Burnsville-Eagan-Savage teacher Mark Riggs on his nomination for Teacher of the Year! I appreciate the hard work and commitment that Mr. Riggs and our district teachers demonstrate every day as they work to ensure that our students are educated for the future. Best of luck to him in the future rounds of the Minnesota Teacher of the Year award!
