RELEASE: REP. WHELAN INTRODUCES FIRST BILL

Tuesday, February 10, 2015
St. Paul, MN- Rep. Abigail Whelan (R-Anoka) introduced her first piece of legislation last Thursday, February 5th. House File 638 delays the review of state math standards until the 2020/2021 school year.

“In delaying the review of our state’s math standards, we are providing continuity to our schools,” said Whelan. “The review process is long and cumbersome for teachers and students. Minnesota already has some of the highest math standards in the entire nation.”

HF 638, which has bipartisan support, has been referred to the Education Innovation Policy Committee where it awaits a hearing.

“Delaying the review of our math standards will ensure that our teachers can continue focusing on educating our students and not devote so much time and energy on the rigorous process of reviewing education standards,” Whelan said. “I am looking forward to working with members on both sides of the aisle to see that this important piece of legislation is passed and becomes law.”
