LUECK NAMED TO SCHOOL TRUST LAND COMMISSION

ST. PAUL – State Rep. Dale Lueck, R-Aitkin, recently was appointed to the Legislature’s Permanent School Trust Land Commission. The commission advises the Department of Natural Resources and the school trust lands director on the management of permanent school trust lands.

The commission includes 12 members. Six members are from the Minnesota Senate and the other six are from of the House of Representative. The commission examines current management practices to ensure we continue to make best use of these income producing lands.

“Our school trust lands were set aside back in 1858 for the purpose of producing income for our school districts,” Lueck said. “Our task is to make sure these valuable properties continue to be managed in manner that produces a stable stream of funding for our schools.”

The federal government granted sections 16 and 36 of every township, or their equivalent, to the state for the use of schools back when Minnesota entered statehood. Minnesota currently has approximate 2.5 million acres in school trust land, plus an additional 1 million acres of mineral rights. The revenues generated from these lands are provided to school districts to be used for educating our children.
