Rep. Rosenthal legislation would protect victims of domestic violence

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

St. Paul, MN- An alarming number of domestic violence homicides in 2013 have heightened public concern about domestic violence in many Minnesota communities. In response, the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW) convened several meetings for legislators, law enforcement, advocates and community members in the summer and fall of 2013. Several bills that resulted from ideas in those meetings are being submitted for Minnesota’s 2014 legislative session which begins February 25, 2014.

Rep. Paul Rosenthal has authored one of those legislative initiatives. His bill would strengthen law enforcement’s ability to arrest perpetrators who evade justice by leaving the scene of domestic violence crimes. Rosenthal worked with domestic violence advocates on similar legislative priorities in 2009.

Rep. Rosenthal serves as the vice-chair of the Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee in the Minnesota House of Representatives. He can be reached at 651-296-7803 or rep.paul.rosenthal@house.mn
