Dear neighbor,
This week Governor Dayton put forward his budget proposal for fiscal year 2016-17. In total, the governor proposes to spend $42.2 billion as it relates to the general fund budget. I have some deep concerns and questions about the size and scope of this budget proposal. I’m hoping we’ll get more answers in the coming weeks.
House committees have already begun to hold hearings with testimony from state agencies about the governor’s budget recommendations. As session moves forward, the House and Senate will begin crafting their budgets based on information from the budget forecast scheduled for February 27.
In accordance with Minnesota House Rules, the House majority will announce a Budget Resolution or net limit in spending in late March. Each House Finance Committee will work within those limits to build the budget.
NATIONAL SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK
This week marked National School Choice Week across the country. I firmly believe parents should be in control of their child’s education. Students – especially those from low-income families – shouldn’t be put in a situation where they can’t escape an inadequate education.
LEGISLATION
In addition to my committee work, I’ve been working on developing legislation. I plan to introduce my first bill next week. Stay tuned!
As always, please feel free to contact me with your thoughts, comments, or concerns on any legislative issues.
Have a great weekend!
