Home Heating Assistance Eligibility Expanded

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

NORTHFIELD, MN – This week, Governor Mark Dayton expanded the eligibility requirements to receive home heating assistance.

Households earning up to 60 percent of the state median income ($43,642 for a family of four) now qualify for financial assistance through the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program (EAP).

“This is great news for individuals and families impacted by a troubling spike in the price of propane and other heating fuels,” said State Representative David Bly (DFL – Northfield).

Bly also reminded Minnesotans of a newly created toll-free hotline operating daily from 9:00am – 4:30pm available for anyone with questions about how to apply for financial assistance. Minnesotans can reach the hotline by calling (800) 657-3504.

“Please do not hesitate to contact me directly as well if I can be of any assistance,” added Bly, who can be reached by phone at (651) 296-0171, by email at rep.david.bly@house.mn or by postal mail at 559 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.

How Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program (EAP) Works:

EAP pays utility companies directly on behalf of eligible households. Qualifying families must apply for assistance at the local service provider in their area.

To find a list of local service providers and information on applying for EAP, visit the Energy Assistance section of the Division of Energy Resources website:

Other forms of assistance may be available through county social service programs, community-based organizations, and nonprofit agencies. See the Stay Warm Minnesota webpage for a list of resources:
