Legislative Update (Jan. 26, 2015)

Monday, January 26, 2015

Friends,

I’m happy to be back at the Capitol to serve as your State Representative. This session, my brother, Rep. Brian Daniels (R-Faribault) and I made state history as the first brother-sister pair to serve in the legislature in the same term. I am incredibly proud of him and am excited to work with him this session.

I am also proud of our legislative priorities this session. We are committed to implementing policies that will better the lives of all Minnesotans; our first five bills will help to grow better-paying jobs, ensure that all of our students, no matter the school district, are receiving a world-class education, protect our seniors in long-term care facilities, focus transportation spending on roads and bridges, and ensure accountability and affordability in health care. During the second week of session, we took the first step towards protecting your family budget by passing federal tax conformity, which provided Minnesota families with $19.9 million in immediate tax relief. This includes significant tax deductions for nearly all Minnesotans, including teachers, students, and homeowners, among others.

On Wednesday, my colleagues and I on the Higher Education Policy and Finance committee held our committee hearing at St. Paul College and took a tour of the facilities, where we met with members of the Board of Trustees for the MnSCU system to discuss the current state of education and their hopes for the future. I’m committed to finding solutions that help encourage our students to pursue 2- and 4-year degrees and prepare the next workforce as the Baby Boomers retire, which is why I’ve authored the House companion to SF5. My bill will create a grant program for higher education institutions to partner with those in the industry so that students who plan on entering the fields of advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health care services, and information technology can be trained to adequately do work required of them, without accumulating student loan debt. This bill is the result of a collaborative effort. I look forward to discussing this bill with my colleagues as the legislative session progresses.

I would love to hear from you to discuss the issues that matter most to you and your family. If you plan on visiting the Capitol, please contact my Legislative Assistant at (651) 296-5884 to schedule an appointment to meet with me in my office, or contact me via email at rep.marion.oneill@house.mn. It is an honor to be your voice in St. Paul.

It was fun to test my welding abilities on MnSCU’s virtual welder!
