Legislative Update from Rep. Whelan (1-23-15)

Friday, January 23, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

It was a shortened week here at the legislature as the House was closed on Monday in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. While it was a condensed week, important committee hearings and events still took place at the Capitol. I am excited to update you on a few items of note.

Property Tax Event

Rep. Steve Drazkowski, Chair of the House Property Tax Committee, and I will be hosting a property tax listening session February 2nd at the Rum River Branch Library, 4201 6th Avenue, Anoka, from 6:00-7:30. I encourage you and your neighbors to attend this session to voice your views on property tax issues in our community.

Protecting the Unborn

I was honored to attend this year’s MCCL March for Life at the Capitol on Thursday. It was a great experience to join with thousands of Minnesotans in peaceful demonstration against our nation’s abortion laws. It is saddening that nearly 57 million have lost their lives since the Roe v. Wade decision. I am committed to working on positive legislative change that will protect the right to life for our state’s most vulnerable. To this end, I signed onto my first piece of pro-life legislation yesterday. The bill will be introduced sometime in the coming weeks.

Highway 10 Improvements

On Thursday afternoon, I joined stakeholders from Anoka County, including officials from the cities of Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Champlin, and Andover in a meeting with the Commissioner of MnDOT to discuss HWY 10. Transportation is such an important priority for our communities. We are hoping to see increased funding for roads and more specifically, for projects like Hwy 10. We explained to the commissioner why improving Highway 10 is of such great importance to our communities and how the current condition of Highway 10 can negatively impact the economic vitality of our communities and the safety of our constituents. It was a constructive meeting and I am hopeful that we will have a productive working relationship moving forward on this important issue.
