Legislative Update

Friday, January 16, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

Here is an update from the Capitol.

Federal Tax Conformity

On Thursday, the House passed an important bill that will offer additional tax relief to Minnesotans across the state including teachers, homeowners and college students. House File 6 conforms Minnesota’s tax code with the federal government, making it easier to file your taxes and ensuring everyone receives their largest possible refund.

Unlike last year when federal tax conformity was stalled in the legislature and not passed until March, this year it was fast tracked through the legislative process. Instead of playing politics with your hard earned money, HF6 passed on a unanimous vote in the House ensuring no one has to file an amended tax return because the legislature dragged its feet.

The Senate is expected to hear this bill next week, and I am hopeful it will be signed by the governor very soon.

FFA at the Capitol

This week, students from the organization Future Farmers of America were at the Capitol to testify before committees and host a reception for legislators. As a farmer, I know how valuable this organization is and am thankful it’s turning out such wonderful future leaders!

AURI

I am honored to have been named a Board Member for the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI), a Minnesota organization helping to create new uses for agricultural products through science and technology. Partnering with entrepreneurs and businesses, AURI bring innovative ideas to life and impacts Minnesota’s agricultural community.

I look forward to working with this wonderful organization.
