The Peppin Report (Jan. 16, 2015)

Friday, January 16, 2015

Dear neighbor,

It’s only the second week of session, but the Minnesota House has been hard at work. In this edition:

1. Tax Relief

2. Upcoming Maple Grove City Council Meeting

3. Your Input Always Welcome

1) Tax Relief

On Thursday, the Minnesota House – led by a new Republican majority – passed tax relief for Minnesota families and small businesses. By acting quickly to put Minnesota’s tax code in conformity with the federal government, Minnesotans will now have access to $19.9 million in tax relief including:

  • Relief for teachers who spend money out of their own pocket on school supplies
  • Relief for students with tuition expenses
  • Relief for homeowners paying mortgage insurance premiums
  • Relief for our small businesses to simplify record keeping

Minnesotans want and deserve certainty as they begin filing their taxes. With the filing season opening on January 20, House Republicans wanted to immediately conform Minnesota’s tax code with federal changes that benefit Minnesota taxpayers. I’m thankful we were able to pass this bill three months before April 15 – the tax filing deadline – as opposed to last year when the legislature didn’t pass tax conformity until March 21. The Senate is expected to take action on this legislation next week.

2) Upcoming Maple Grove City Council Meeting

I plan to attend the January 20 meeting of the Maple Grove City Council at 6:00 to discuss legislative issues with Maple Grove residents, Mayor Steffenson, members of the city council and city staff. Senator Warren Limmer and Representative Dennis Smith (who represents the southern and eastern sections of Maple Grove) are scheduled to attend as well.
