Gruenhagen introduces bill to expand Highway 212

Friday, January 16, 2015
ST. PAUL, MN—Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, introduced House File 80 this week, a bill to complete construction of a portion of Highway 212 into a four-lane divided highway, a key transportation priority for Carver County, and a route used by many in District 18B to get to and from the Twin Cities Metro Area. HF80 would expand Highway 212 from County Road 11 to County Road 43.

The bill would appropriate $28 million from the Trunk Highway Fund, $20 million for right-of-way acquisition and construction for reconstruction of the highway, and $8 million for the reconstruction of the Highway 212 and County Road 40 interchange. Gruenhagen intends to introduce additional legislation to complete the entire stretch from Chaska to Cologne, which will give legislators the option to complete some or all of the expansion, depending on available transportation funding.

"Improving our roads and bridges is one of the top priorities of the new Republican House," Gruenhagen said. "Converting this portion of Highway 212 to a four-lane divided highway will improve safety as well as the flow of traffic for the thousands who travel on it each day."

The bill was referred to the House Transportation Policy and Finance Committee. Gruenhagen said he hopes the bill will receive its first committee hearing in the coming weeks.
