House Jobs Chair supports business expansion across Minnesota

Minnesota companies have announced 112 expansion projects statewide

ST. PAUL – According to a new report from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), 31 businesses announced expansion projects in Minnesota during the third quarter and plan to create an estimated 1,500 new jobs statewide in coming years. During the first three quarters of 2013, businesses announced 112 expansion projects statewide. Those expansion projects will create an estimated 5,600 new jobs in Minnesota over the next two years.

New investments in job-creation initiatives made during the 2013 legislative session have played an important role in incentivizing business expansions statewide. In fact, new state support helped DEED play a role in nearly half (14) of the business expansions announced during the third quarter. Rep. Tim Mahoney (DFL – St Paul), who serves as the Chair of the House Jobs and Economic Development Committee, is happy to see businesses across the state using the tools that were included in the 2013 Budget.

“This was an area we knew we needed to invest in,” said Mahoney. “During the last budget cycle, investments in job creation got slashed to its lowest point in years. This year, we knew we needed to create a set of tools that would help support businesses in every corner of the state.  This kind of expansion is a great example of the kind of economic activity you can create by working with private companies that just need cooperation from the state to get their project done.  Cooperation can mean loans and grants or just a more streamlined process will all the departments that impact business and business expansion. This is going to mean 5,600 new jobs that will help 5,600 families put a roof over their heads and food on their tables in communities across Minnesota.”

The full business expansion report and a map showing where the expansions will occur can be found here.
