Friday, November 1, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota School Social Workers Association (MSSWA) recently presented Rep. Carlos Mariani (DFL – St. Paul) with their 2013 Legislator of the Year award at a ceremony in Chaska, Minnesota.

The organization praised Rep. Mariani for his ongoing advocacy for Minnesota children and families.

“He exemplifies the value of social justice which is one of the core values of the profession of social work,” said MSSWA President Christy McCoy. “Representative Mariani understands the value of a multi-disciplinary approach for student support services in our schools and the unique role and expertise of school social workers as the mental health professionals and practitioners of the educational team.”

“I’m honored to receive this award and proud to stand with MSSWA in support of Minnesota’s students,” said Rep. Mariani. “It makes a big difference when you have partners like MSSWA. They made an important impact this past legislative session, which was marked by historic progress on education.”

McCoy also noted Mariani’s commitment to passing the Safe and Supportive Schools Act, one of the group’s top legislative priorities.

“MSSWA has long supported the passage of a comprehensive anti-bullying legislation that promotes evidence based strategies and guidelines to support schools in creating a safe environment for all students,” added McCoy. “As a strong advocate for educational resources and opportunities for all Minnesota students, it is only fitting to present Representative Carlos Mariani with the Minnesota School Social Work Association 2013 Legislator of the Year award.”
