Capitol Update from Rep. Fabian

Friday, January 9, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

Tuesday marked the beginning of the 2015 legislative session and my third term as your state representative. It is an honor and privilege to serve you in the House, and I look forward to continuing to use our Northern Minnesota values in St. Paul!

I am also happy to say that with your support, balance has been brought back to state government. One-party government in St. Paul is gone, and we have a new Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

Traveling across my district this summer and fall, I listened to you and heard your requests to change the way things are done at the Capitol. Too many small businesses on Main Street are hurting from cumbersome regulations and high taxes. Minnesotans are losing out on new job opportunities as companies expand across the border to find a more business friendly climate that includes lower taxes and fewer regulations. Our schools are being burdened by expensive state mandates that take away time and money from educating our kids. Too much money is being spent on light rail instead of going toward maintaining roads and bridges.

Folks, state government needs to change.

The good news is this week, House Republicans introduced five initiatives we will be championing this session. Here’s a quick break down of House Files 1-5.

  • House File 1: Grows better-paying jobs in Minnesota by encouraging investments in business through tax credits, cutting down on unnecessary government regulations and limiting state agencies’ power to impede on a competitive business climate.
  • House File 2: Gives every child a chance for a world-class education by reforming teacher licensure, and increases local control by giving school districts more flexibility and empowering them to hire and maintain effective teachers.
  • House File 3: Protects aging adults’ quality of life by attracting top quality nursing home and health care workers into the field through education loan forgiveness and by creating savings plans to cover long-term care costs.
  • House File 4:  Refocuses transportation dollars for roads and bridges and requires MnDOT to find additional savings to reinvest in infrastructure.
  • House File 5: Ensures fair access to affordable health care by reining in MNsure with additional oversight and eliminating unchecked compensation for bloated bonuses and executive salaries.

Of course, we still have to find compromise with our friends in the DFL-led Senate, but I believe we can work together on these issues, finding bipartisan solutions that benefit folks across our great state. I think we will be able to accomplish some important things this session and get Minnesota moving in the right direction!
