LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Legislative Update (Dec. 8, 2014)

Dear Neighbor,

I’m proud to announce that I was recently named 2014 Hero of the Food Industry by the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA), a state trade association representing the food industry since 1897 with over 200 retail members and 1,100 stores statewide.

“Representative Scott has demonstrated outstanding leadership in supporting a free marketplace, not placing undue burdens on local businesses, and helping our neighbors keep their shopping baskets full. Her steadfast commitment to common sense policies creates job growth and spurs economic activity,” said Jamie Pfuhl, President of the Minnesota Grocers Association. “This award is a testament to her leadership, vision, and support of the industry.”

“Our community is blessed to have an abundant network of job creators for the industry. I am truly honored to receive the 2014 Hero of the Food Industry award from the Minnesota Grocers Association,” said Scott. “A free marketplace allows for businesses and jobs to flourish while creating lower costs for consumers. I will continue to promote policies that put food on the table for Minnesota families and provides one out of every twenty jobs in the state.”

CIVIL LAW & DATA PRACTICES COMMITTEE

Last month, Speaker-designate Kurt Daudt (R-Crown) announced that I will be chairing the House Civil Law & Data Practices Committee. As chair of this important committee, I will be investigating how government agencies keep and transfer the private information of Minnesotans. Specifically, I’m eager to look into how schools and companies that contract with schools collect data on students and what they do with that data. I’ll also be seeking answers as to how license plate reader data, police cameras, and data collected by smart phone carriers are used.

Recently, the Office of the Legislative Auditor found that the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) lacked adequate controls to ensure the accurate and complete transfer of recipient data from MNsure to DHS’s medical payment system. The report from the legislative auditor also found that staff with the Office of MN.IT Services inappropriately accessed recipients’ personal information. I plan to look into these issues more thoroughly next year.

I’m also pleased to announce that Representative-elect Dennis Smith (R-Maple Grove), a well-respected attorney, will serve as our committee’s vice chairman.
