Statement from Rep. Matt Dean on Preferred One withdrawing from MNsure

Tuesday, September 16, 2014
Today PreferredOne announced that they would no longer be part of MNsure. This will mean 60% of all the Minnesotans on MNsure will have to go through the Dayton exchange nightmare all over again.

This failed experiment has just made things worse for Minnesotans.

Dayton and Democrats controlling the legislature forced this unnecessary disaster on our state because of politics. This was made clear over the last two years during the legislative process as MNsure was being created and implemented:

1. MNsure excluded doctors and insurers from its board of directors. Does that seem like a good idea for an entity in charge of delivering health care and paying for it with insurance?

2. MNsure excluded itself from outside auditing or legislative oversight. Democrats voted down my legislation to provide this oversight. Does that seem like a good idea for one of the most heavily regulated sectors of the economy?

3. MNsure was told to go live even though it was not ready.

4. Minnesota is one of a handful of states still pouring good money after bad with the disproven exchange formula: Political Hipsters + Website + $200 million in taxpayer dollars = Healthcare Reform.

5. Minnesota provided quality care second to none at one of the lowest costs for healthcare in the country. We stood the most to lose by making our state an ObamaCare state medical experiment. Despite warnings from the medical profession, business and Republicans, Democrats pushed this bad medicine which has just made things worse.

It wouldn't be surprising to see employers and healthcare providers being blamed by the Dayton administration for the MNsure debacle, due to the Governor's refusal to accept a shred of responsibility for this mess. It's time for the politicians who made this mess to take responsibility and stop blaming those who will care for the sick and figure out how to pay for it.
