Select Committee on Veterans Housing to take fact-finding trip to Minneapolis Veterans Home, VA Medical Facility

The House Select Committee on Veterans Housing will tour the Minneapolis Veterans Home and the VA Medical Facility on Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

The committee is made up of both Republican and Democrats and will research, investigate and report on the current state of housing for Minnesota veterans and ultimately recommend policies to assure safe, high-quality and cost-effective housing options are available for Minnesota veterans.

The committee, which is chaired by Representative Jerry Newton (DFL-Coon Rapids), will tour the VA Long Term Care Facility from 10:10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with Dr. Gary D. Goldish, Chief of Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service. From 11:10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., committee members will answer questions from Minneapolis Veterans Home staff. Then they will be led on a tour of the MVH facilities by Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Deputy Commissioner Mike Gallucci.

The Select Committee on Veterans Housing will suggest legislation that will address the problem of providing safe, high-quality, cost-effective housing for Minnesota veterans, including those veterans with long-term care needs and those who are homeless.

Its final report will look at the cost and effectiveness of current programs; analysis of geographic access to veterans housing; the potential for partnership with the private sector to provide housing; and assessment of federal rules and restrictions that may limit the options available to Minnesota and suggestions to provide more flexibility.

It will issue its report by February 1, 2014.
